Marile and I hope this note finds you and yours well.
Today, September 11, marks twenty-five years since our country was attacked—in New York, at the Pentagon, and in a field near Shanksville. Nearly three thousand lives were taken. Families were changed in an hour. Congress named the date Patriot Day. It is not a holiday. It is a day to reflect and remember.
Earlier this morning at 8:46 a.m., the law asked for a simple civic act: a moment of silence. In the years since, we have also learned to remember those who came home from the ashes.
This summer, Miami-Dade County dedicated the Renaissance of Towers sculpture at Miami International Airport. It is a localized tribute drawn of the Twin Towers, serving as a permanent reminder to our jurisdiction of the cost of that day.
The 9/11 Memorial echoes a line from Virgil on its wall:
“No day shall erase you from the memory of time.”
We honor the women and men who ran toward the fire, and we hold sacred the memory of every life lost. Marile, our children, and I are keeping the families of those lost, and the first responders who answered the call, in our prayers today.
