As a Florida Republican, attorney and political insider for the past 30+ years, I’ve seen my share of political operators. But few have impressed me as much as Susie Wiles, President Trump’s pick for White House Chief of Staff. Her selection signals a significant shift from the chaotic days of the first Trump administration, and I believe it’s a move that will bring a new level of discipline and focus to the West Wing.
Wiles, a veteran of Florida politics, is no Washington insider. She’s spent decades navigating the complex landscape of Florida campaigns, and her experience shows. She’s worked for a spectrum of Republicans, from Ronald Reagan to Mitt Romney, and most recently played a crucial role in the 2016 and 2024 Trump campaigns. She is known for her ability to organize, strategize, and deliver results, especially in the critical swing state of Florida.
Her early career in communications and public relations laid the groundwork for her future success. She’s been a campaign manager for Rick Scott’s 2010 gubernatorial run and advised two Jacksonville mayors. In the 2016 presidential election, Wiles ran the Trump campaign’s operations in Florida, and in 2018, she helped Ron DeSantis’ campaign for governor. Wiles is described as the “most feared and least known political operative in America”.
This time around, however, she is not just a campaign operative. She will be the first woman to hold the position of White House Chief of Staff. Wiles is the “ice maiden”, but that may just be the exterior. She’s not one for the spotlight, preferring to work behind the scenes. She declined an invitation to speak at Trump’s election night victory speech.
Wiles is not just about campaigns, but about governing. Her approach is focused on teamwork, loyalty, and competence, all with a “no-drama zone” in the West Wing. She is determined to prevent backbiting, second-guessing, and any other counterproductive behaviors. She also understands that Trump is the central figure, and her role is to implement his vision, not manage him. She managed the campaign, not the candidate.
Key policy priorities include boosting energy production, reducing regulations, keeping taxes low, and securing the border. These are promises that she will help Trump deliver. She emphasizes the first two years of the administration, leading up to the 2026 midterms, as the critical window to achieve these goals. She views this as a time for “all gas and no brakes” with a focus on efficiency, clear timelines, and accountability. Wiles has been very involved in hiring, to ensure competence and loyalty. She has stated that the new administration will feature the “finest public servants available,” focused on “breaking down bureaucratic walls”.
Trump has learned from the past. He has said his biggest mistake in his first term was hiring the wrong people and he knows better now. Wiles is determined to avoid those mistakes, and has made it clear she will not tolerate anyone who isn’t working towards their shared goals.
Her selection as Chief of Staff, combined with Trump’s experience, sets the stage for a focused, efficient, and successful administration. With Wiles at the helm, we may well see a new era of effective, conservative governance in Washington. It’s an exciting time for our country and for those of us who believe in President Trump’s vision.
