Polls Edge Toward Trump: Here’s Where the Swing States Stand
The 2024 election is ramping up, and it’s looking like another nail-biter. While Vice President Harris and former President Trump are neck-and-neck in several states, recent polling shows Trump gaining ground in key battlegrounds. Let’s break down what’s happening in some of the most important swing states where the margins are razor-thin.
Michigan: A True Toss-Up
Michigan, a state with 15 electoral votes, remains a critical battleground — and right now, it’s a dead heat. The latest poll from RMG Research shows both candidates locked at 49%, making it anyone’s game. Trump’s 2016 win here shocked many political analysts, and he’s aiming for a repeat. But Harris is still putting up a strong fight, and with both campaigns doubling down on their efforts in the state, this one is far from over.
Michigan’s industrial base and suburban swing voters will likely be key in deciding which way this state leans. As both candidates vie for the working-class vote, expect Michigan to remain in the spotlight until Election Day.
Nevada: Harris’s Lead Shrinks
In Nevada, Harris is clinging to a slim lead, but it’s getting tighter by the day. The Hill/DDHQ average has her up by just two-tenths of a point, down from a more comfortable 2-point lead a month ago. Nevada may only have six electoral votes, but with its unique demographics — particularly the high number of service workers in Las Vegas and Reno — it’s a must-win state for both candidates.
Trump has made inroads here by targeting economic policies that appeal to the state’s large population of tipped workers. Harris, for her part, adopted Trump’s proposal to make tipped income tax-exempt, hoping to win over some of the same voters. However, the polling gap is closing fast. A recent Trafalgar Research poll — a firm that accurately predicted Trump’s 2016 victory — shows Harris ahead by just a single point. This one is going to be close.
North Carolina: Trump Holds a Narrow Lead
North Carolina is another state where Trump has a slight edge. According to The Hill/DDHQ average, Trump leads by 1 point in the state’s latest polling. North Carolina, which has 16 electoral votes, was one of the few battleground states Trump carried in 2020, and he’s hoping to repeat that performance in 2024.
In-person early voting began recently, with over 353,000 North Carolinians casting their ballots on the first day. This strong early turnout suggests both sides are mobilizing their base. But Harris can take solace in a Quinnipiac University poll that shows her leading by 3 points — though other polls still give Trump the advantage.
One wildcard in North Carolina could be the impact of Hurricane Helene, which caused severe flooding in parts of the state. Trump is scheduled to visit Asheville, one of the hardest-hit areas. If his response to the disaster is perceived as inadequate, it could hurt him with voters. On the flip side, any missteps from the Harris campaign regarding disaster relief could play in Trump’s favor.
Pennsylvania: Battling for the Big Prize
Pennsylvania is the biggest battleground prize, with 19 electoral votes up for grabs, and both candidates are fighting tooth and nail for it. Right now, Harris holds a razor-thin lead of three-tenths of a point in The Hill/DDHQ average, but just a few months ago, Trump was up by nearly 5 points.Â
The importance of Pennsylvania can’t be overstated. After Biden dropped out, Harris gained momentum in the state, particularly after the September debate. But Trump’s campaign has been working overtime to regain the ground they lost, pouring money into the state’s airwaves. According to Forbes, nearly $300 million has already been spent on political ads in Pennsylvania, more than in any other battleground.
Pollsters are split on who’s truly ahead. Some Democratic strategists argue that the averages are skewed by GOP-leaning firms. Meanwhile, a New York Times/Siena College poll gives Harris a 4-point edge among likely voters. Regardless, Pennsylvania remains a toss-up — and given its size and importance, it could well be the state that decides the entire election.
Wisconsin: Margins Are Paper Thin
Wisconsin, another swing state, is seeing some of the tightest margins in the country. Trump currently holds a lead of just half a percentage point in The Hill/DDHQ average. Wisconsin’s 10 electoral votes are critical to both campaigns.Â
Back in 2016, Trump became the first Republican to win Wisconsin since Reagan. But in 2020, he lost the state to Biden by a narrow margin. Now, both Trump and Harris are making their case to the state’s voters, and polling shows it’s a coin toss. This battleground state has historically been unpredictable, and with only a small number of voters likely to swing the outcome, expect both campaigns to spend a lot of time and money here in the final stretch.
What Does It All Mean?
With Trump gaining ground in several key swing states, the 2024 election is looking incredibly competitive. Many of these states are still within the margin of error, meaning the race could tip in either direction as we approach Election Day.
As we saw in 2016 and 2020, battleground states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin will play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the election. The polling may currently edge toward Trump, but with weeks still to go and early voting already underway, nothing is set in stone.
Both campaigns are ramping up their efforts in these crucial states, and the final outcome may come down to who can better turn out their base. With polling averages showing margins as tight as a fraction of a percentage point, the race is far from over.
